Position Summary:

The Cardiac Sonographer performs high-quality echocardiographic and vascular ultrasound examinations to support the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular conditions. This role independently operates specialized imaging equipment, acquires accurate diagnostic images, and communicates pertinent findings to interpreting providers in a timely and professional manner. The Cardiac Sonographer ensures all studies are completed in accordance with established clinical protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements while maintaining clear, compassionate, patient-centered communication. Through technical expertise, attention to detail, and collaboration with the cardiovascular care team, the position plays an important role in delivering timely, effective, and compassionate cardiovascular care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform cardiac and vascular sonographic examinations following established protocols, ensuring accurate image acquisition and documentation.
  • Verify patient identification, explain procedures, and maintain patient comfort and safety throughout the imaging process.
  • Collaborate with cardiologists, radiologists, and clinical teams to support timely interpretation and follow up on diagnostic findings.
  • Operate and maintain ultrasound equipment, reporting malfunctions and ensuring readiness for daily use.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and departmental quality initiatives.
  • Participate in ongoing education, cross training, and skill development to support evolving imaging technology and clinical practices.


Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • RDCS, CCI, RDMS, or ARRT(S) registered (required within 2 years when NDMIRTBE license is conditional)
  • NDMIRTBE licensed or NDMIRTBE conditional license
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare provider BLS required within 30 days of hire

Educational Requirements:
  • Echocardiography/Vascular Technologist: RDCS, CCI, RDMS, or ARRT registered (required within 2 years when NDMIRTBE license is conditional)
  • RVT optional
  • Will be cross trained into pediatric echo and vascular ultrasound if no formal education has been completed
  • Keep current compliance with continuing medical education (CME) requirements

Experience Requirements:
  • Experience preferred but not required
  • New graduates welcome to apply

Special Skills or Training Requirements:
  • Graduate of formal Echocardiography or Diagnostic Medical Sonography program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

The Cardiac Sonographer is frequently required to stand for extended periods, reach, and position patients for imaging procedures. The role involves repetitive arm and hand movements when manipulating transducers and equipment, as well as occasional lifting or assisting patients with limited mobility. Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity are necessary to obtain diagnostic quality images and to communicate effectively with patients and staff.

Environmental Requirements:

Work is performed in ultrasound suites, patientcare units, and diagnostic areas where exposure to bodily fluids, cleaning agents, and medical equipment is common. The environment may involve dim lighting, moderate noise, and periods of sustained concentration during imaging procedures. Strict adherence to infection control measures, ergonomic practices, and safety protocols is required to maintain a safe and compliant imaging environment.
